What a glorious year 2012 will be with the news of not only a new Swallow the Sun album but now word is out that Barren Earth is releasing their third( second full length)album ‘The Devil’s Resolve’ on March 13th. I now really really do think that both Barren Earth and Swallow the Sun will be touring together since Mikko Kotamaki is the vocalist for both bands and it would make sense to combine the two on a single tour. Barren Earth’s last album ‘ The Curse of the Red River’ was my top pick of 2010 so of course I’m expecting some good things. How can I not get excited when I get a press quote like this?
Mixed by Dan Swanö (Opeth/Katatonia) at Unisound, The Devil’s Resolve continues with all the trademarks one has come to associate with Barren Earth: brutal riffs, gloomy growls, majestic melodies, as well as acoustic and progressive passages. But this time the band has delved even deeper, taking this sophomore effort to the extremes through musical landscapes encompassing brutal death metal, doomy vocals, trippy 70’s prog lunacy, pastoral passages and even bagpipes.
Barren Earth is back!
That sounds like a delicious recipe to me. I mean even bagpipes are getting thrown in. If you’ve missed it check out Draeden’s interview with Mikko from last year where I submitted questions that tackle this cross pollination of bands.
