Mayhem Festival 2012 Lineup Is Released To Mixed Reviews But Better Then Last Year. I Guess.

It’s that time of year again where the the U.S. drags out it’s premiere metal festival which pales against anything across the Atlantic. Rumors were swirling for the past few months of who was going to be there this year and it looks like the atypical clown show it’s been ever since inception except this year it looks like the promoters are trying to appeal to the older set (i.e. guys like me). Here is the lineup as it’s been announced.

Main Stage

Slipknot
Slayer
Special Guest to be announced on Match 5th
Rotating support band from the Jager stage

Jagermeister Stage

Anthrax
The Devil Wears Prada
As I Lay Dying
Asking Alexandria
Whitechapel
High on Fire

So you essentially have the scene kids and pit ninjas hanging out at the Jager stage ( I’m affectionately calling it the Mini Vans Warped tour stage) and then leaving so the old Anthrax fans can enjoy the rest of the show. Then the mainstage has the by now stereotypical nu metal band headlining but the old folks can hang out and watch Slayer (I’m pretty sure there are a lot of fans that like both ‘knot and Slayer though) and it’s rumored to be Motorhead as the other special guest. I don’t get why we have to wait until March 5th to find out unless there are details to be worked out with touring. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not Motorhead but instead Lamb of God who are gearing up for a new album release. That last part would make more sense but whatever.

I’d actually be interested in going for once this year if it is confirmed Motorhead will be there but I have no clue how the scheduling works at one of these things. Ideally I’d want to avoid all of the openers on the Jager stage and check out Anthrax and then head over to the Main Stage to see Motorhead and Slayer and then leave after a couple of songs by Slipknot. That would justify the money spent on a ticket because those three bands I’ve never seen live. If it’s not Motorhead going I can’t justify spending the cash to not be able to see the complete set of Anthrax and Slayer. Alright enough about me and my wants. What do you all think of this news?

    • Last year was Disturbed,Godsmack,Trivium, Suicide Silence…etc. Need I say more?
Last year it was Megadeth which is the only band I cared about and this year it’s potentially three bands. Notice I also didn’t completely commit to that statement in the banner title though.

      • Last year also had Machine Head and Red Fang…and Kingdom of Sorrow were’t bad either. This year there is just a little less suck. Slayer should be headlining and Anthrax should not be on the Jager stage.

      • Totally agree, I have no idea why Anthrax would be on the same stage as those other bands.

I won’t go to this, but if I did, I would really have a tough time deciding if I wanted to see High on Fire, (which I’ve never had the chance to do, but would really like to), if it meant I also had to get there early enough to be at the same venue as the next few acts (plus their fans!)

Anthrax and Slayer in the same day would be cool, especially at like 1/4 the price of a “Big 4” show.

Finally, I’d just like to say- I don’t understand how Slipknot are considered relevent enough, today, to be headlining over Slayer and possibly even Motorhead, and I’ve never really been a fan of theirs BUT I would recommend not letting that deter you from going (if you’re maybe on the fence about it). I saw them several years ago, also in a festival environment, and they do put on a hell of a show.

      • It’s more of a money issue that is a deterrent at this point then anything. I liked the early Motorhead albums and I would go to see them because they’re a part of history. But you add in the cost of gas money(It’s over an hour drive),parking, and the cost of the ticket I’d want to get my moneys worth.
I think Slipknot gets top billing because of marketing more then anything. They know it will be a younger crowd therefore more of a draw then if they had Slayer or Motorhead headlining. From a historical perspective three of those bands should be headliners, but history doesn’t make money unless you’re Van Halen, Black Sabbath, or Metallica. So they add in the Paul Gray drama, the wishy washy will they be back afterwards hype and therefore they profit.
