It’s been said that money is the root of all evil. In this present day world we live in I’m beginning to agree with that statement. Politics and elections are focused on how much or how little everything has, millions are being spent on commercials for the upcoming Super Bowl to pander to the nimrods that don’t watch the game, and I’m still in bankruptcy. But for the purposes of this article I’d like to focus on how money is a bitch in terms of bands and one band in particular, Black Sabbath. This is supposed to be the year of the legacy band reunion with the most notable being Van Halen and Sabbath. Van Halen’s motoring along nicely on that one but Sabbath is having some problems. First Tony Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma. And now recently it has been determined that Bill Ward will sit out the reunion because of …you guessed it….money.
Yesterday it was reported that Ward was going to sit out the reunion unless a signable contract could be written up. You can check out that statement here. Well I guess that contract did not surface because the Sabbath camp had this to say on their Facebook page.
We were saddened to hear yesterday via Facebook that Bill declined publicly to participate in our current Black Sabbath plans…we have no choice but to continue recording without him although our door is always open… We are still in the UK with Tony. Writing and recording the new album and on a roll… See you at Download!!!
– Tony, Ozzy and Geezer
I think it would be a pretty fair assessment that of the four guys Bill Ward probably has the least amount of net worth. The man’s health is a shambles and he’s virtually done nothing professionally of financial note except when Sabbath does something that involves him. Meanwhile Ozzy has more money then he knows what to do with but has Sharon to take care of that and Tony has the Sabbath licensing royalties coming in while Geezer has kept himself busy in and out of the Sabbath related camps. So is his percentage that was offered to him related along those lines and he’s being greedy? Or is he being treated unfairly? What I do know is that only money could deprive fans of a full blown reunion album and tour involving everyone that was there from the beginning. Not just the beginning of the band but of the genres of music that we have come to love two or three generations deep. Events like this are once in a lifetime. Led Zeppelin won’t reunite because Robert Plant doesn’t want to and even if they did it’s not the core group because John Bonham died decades ago. Van Halen fucked over Michael Anthony so now this reunion is happening with Wolfgang on bass. Pink Floyd most likely will never reunite again because David Gilmour doesn’t want to and Richard Wright died. So what I’m getting at is this is the one chance that a founding rock band can get together one last time for old times sake and entertain three generations of fans before calling it a day and money is fucking that up. Money that they would be raking in regardless of what the contract says.
The guys aren’t getting younger and obviously the health thing comes into play so I don’t understand why they can’t just give Bill Ward his 25 percent and everyone is happy. That statement by Sabbath does leave a ‘in’, I just hope somebody takes it.
