Review-Tome of the Future Ancients by Ice Dragon

Ice Dragon is a band that’s been around for a couple of years now, releasing albums via Bandcamp and cassette. The best way to describe their sound is to compare it with Electric Wizard. Like the Wizard, they play fuzzy, doomy, gloomy metal. Also like the Wizard, they keep the vocals buried deep in the mix, all of this causes an eerie, yet hypnotic vibe.

Their last two albums were really good, not “good for a band that’s not on a label” good-but really fucking good. It’s kind of surprising that no one has picked them up, especially since this sound is really popular nowadays.

“Tome of the Ancient Dragon” is the band’s newest album and starts off with the absolutely monster “Manuscript 408”. The song is so eerie and haunting and sets the listeners expectations high for the rest of the album. “NATIAIWS” follows and doesn’t let up with the slow doom. The rest of the album follows in a similar fashion crushing the listener and leaving you begging for more.

That’s not to say the album is perfect-It sure as hell isn’t. The album gets into some really strange sonic territory which makes some songs drag out a bit longer than needed with “Man Sitting in a Field of Grass” “The Black Book of Hours” both sticking out as especially strange.

Overall though I would say that this is really strong album from a relatively unknown band. It releases on March 20th. Check out their last two albums here which were both released as “name your price” downloads.
