Devil’s Review: Acephalix-Deathless Master

Acephalix are a death metal band from San Francisco who started in 2007. According to the information that I can find about the band, their earlier releases contained a more metal-edged crustpunk sound than their current brutal death metal style.

The album starts off with the crushing “Bastard Self” and doesn’t let up for the rest of the album. Even though most of the songs are straight-on brutal, many are actually catchy at the same time, but this isn’t no melodic death metal. Think Obituary or Deicide rather than Arch Enemy and you will have a better idea of what to expect.

While Acephalix doesn’t do anything particularly different to stand apart from the crowd, the band does what it does extremely well and as a result “Deathless Master” is highly recommended, I don’t think anyone into death metal could listen to this album and not be pleased. Songs like “In Arms of Nothing”, “Raw Life” and the title track will have you banging your head and wanting to start a pit in your living room. The album delivers the goods and delivers them well.

Deathless Master releases on Tuesday from Southern Lord, do yourself a favor and pick it up!
