Past Demons: Saxon – Crusader

I’m going way back for this one.  Saxon’s song Crusader from their album of the same name was released in 1984 and was the band’s 6th album in 5 years (far more prolific than anyone now).  It also was a bit of a turn of direction for the band from their purely NWOBHM sound to a somewhat more commercial bent.  That said, it was still early 80s metal and certainly nothing that you could call mainstream.  A lot of the remainder of the album is lacking in “metalness”, but Crusader is epic and crushing, probably one of the best songs Saxon have ever written – and we are talking about a span of over 30 years.  Killer riffing, superb guitar solo, awesome and historically accurate lyrics, Crusader is a song for the ages.  Crusader, lord of the realm!

I hear the sound in a METAL way.
