Devil's Review: Ancients EP

Ancients are a Vancouver BC based band that sound kind of like a cross between Mastodon and Opeth-progressive,yet heavy at the same time. I had heard of the band before as I do live in Vancouver, so thought I would check them out.

At only two songs long, the EP is a bit on the short side, however what we do hear is quite impressive. The first track “Humanist” really shows off the band’s musical skills, especially with the vocalist whose variants between clean and harsh vocals doesn’t sound forced. This song specifically reminded me of more latter day Mastodon.

The next song “Built to Die” starts off with a full-on thrash attack before settling into a more mid-paced groove and then into lighter territory, before getting back into a heavy thrash assault again.

This was an excellent introduction to the band and I can’t wait to hear more from them in the future. Both songs were very well done and enjoyable. The EP can be downloaded for free on their Bandcamp page.
