Kai Hansen, if you don’t know, is the founder, lead guitarist, and vocalist of power metal band Gamma Ray, and the co-founder and former member of German metal band Helloween. He also has a newer band, Unisonic, that has been reviewed here recently. Hansen is quite prominent in the world of Power Metal and a man who many consider to be the “the grandfather of Power Metal”, since he had a hand in the genesis of two of the most influential bands in the genre. In addition to those, he played a significant part in the early days of one of my favorite PM bands, Iron Savior.
Hansen has also participated in a number of other groups, such as Blind Guardian, Angra, Hammerfall, Avantasia, and StormWarrior. Most of those were collaborations on an album, a tour, or a handful of songs. His greatest contributions to the world of Metal, though, are typically recognized as the 2nd, 3rd & 4th albums by Helloween, Walls of Jericho and the two Keeper of the Seven Keys albums. Those three works were, and are still, quite influential to the Power Metal genre, and have stood the test of time, remaining seminal works by one of the most important bands in Metal.
Kai has had a hand in some of the catchiest Metal songs written including Future World, Dr. Stein, I’m Alive, and the ever popular I Want Out. He definitely has a knack for melody, yet retaining the heaviness we all enjoy. He certainly has had a great career and continues to tour and record, hopefully providing the Metal world with more killer Power Metal.
Check out my favorite Gamma Ray song:
And of course, I Want Out:
I hear the sound in a METAL way.
