Burnt Offerings: Edguy – Mysteria

Tobias Sammet is oft maligned in the Metal community.  I am not sure why because the guy can write a song, but I have read plenty of derogatory things about him.  I don’t know him personally, but to me, this is unfortunate.  I enjoy a lot of what he has done with both Edguy and Avantatsia.  My favorites by each band, The Metal Opera and Hellfire Club, are a couple of really good Power Metal albums.  They contain good songwriting, catchy melodies and enough aggressiveness to keep it interesting.  I think my first exposure to Edguy was their 2004 album Hellfire Club which led me to explore other works by the band as a whole and stuff that Sammet was involved in.

In the Power Metal genre, Edguy are probably not legends, but they do have a unique enough sound to separate them from the also-rans and should be considered in the top tier of PM.  Here is one of my favorites from Edguy – Mysteria.  I love the scream starting at about the 20 second mark!  Enjoy.

I hear the sound in a METAL way.

  1. Hmm. This is a name I’ve seen a lot of times — like in the Relapse mail order catalog or whatever — but always just skipped over it. Maybe because the name is a little bit goofy-sounding? I don’t know. Anyway, I guess maybe I should give ’em a chance sometime…

  2. Goofy name? Yeah, I suppose. I guess there is a story behind it.

I would recommend Hellfire Club and pretty much any album before it.
