I know I’ve been quiet around here for quite some time and I apologize but it can’t be helped. So with that said it has to be pretty big news for me to come out of this shell and announce something. Over the weekend Nightwish was due to play in Denver,Colorado a long with Kamelot as part of their huge U.S. tour. Anette Olzen ended up getting sick with I’m assuming flu like symptoms such as vomiting and fever and ended up going to a local hospital to get checked out. Well the rest of Nightwish carried on with the show without her by having more crowd participation and borrowing Elize Ryd(Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz(The Agonist) from Kamelot to finish the show. Anette took to her blog to voice her displeasure that the show wasn’t cancelled and that substitutes were brought in to sing her parts.
“I was never asked if it was OK they used Elize and Alissa in the show [Friday] night. I don’t think it’s a good decision they made and I’m sorry for those of you who came to see the whole band but got something else. But I was very ill and this decision wasn’t mine.”
“This is just music. Like life, sometimes we get ill and shows do get canceled. Rihanna wouldn’t ask Britney Spears to sing for her if she was ill.”
Well a mere day or two after that outburst Nightwish released this press release.
“Another chapter of the Nightwish story has ended today. Nightwish and Anette Olzon have decided to part company, in mutual understanding, for the good of all parties involved. In recent times it has become increasingly obvious that the direction and the needs of the band were in conflict, and this has led to a division from which we cannot recover.
Nightwish has no intention of cancelling any upcoming shows, and as a result we have decided to bring in a substitute vocalist starting in Seattle 1.10.2012. Her name is Floor Jansen from The Netherlands (ex-After Forever, ReVamp), and she has graciously stepped in to help us complete the Imaginaerum world tour.
We are all strongly committed to this journey, this vehicle of spirit, and we are sure that this will lead to a brighter future for everyone. We forever remain excited about the adventures to come, and we are extremely proud of the two beautiful albums and the wonderful shows we shared together.”
I’ve been following Nightwish for quite some time at least since near the end of Tarjas tenure with the band and I have to say, if you want to be a singer in this band, you damn well better check your ego at the door or Toumas will fucking fire you. They had no problems canning Tarja after the DVD they recorded was done and they were backstage so it would be nothing to fire Anette in the middle of a tour because she was being a whining bitch.
Look, I get she was sick and not feeling good so sensitivity was on high but they’ve been through this before. When Anette was hired to replace Tarja they put her in a booth and had her record vocals over music that was already written, composed, and recorded. Marcos vocals were already done. Nightwish then toured for I believe over 2 years in support of that album and she couldn’t handle the rigors of an exhaustive tour. They take a year off and she goes and gets pregnant then breaks a bone tripping over the kids security gate. They release Imaginaereum which is even more of an ambitious undertaking then Dark Passion Play was. I imagine (no pun intended) the cost of putting together the album alone was pricey as hell and to team up with Kamelot who is on the verge of releasing a new album with a new singer is a huge tour and quite a bit of money went in to putting that together. They can’t just cancel a show because Anette gets sick once again. And to sit there and compare her and the band with Rihanna and Britney Spears is ludicrous. Not to mention except for hastily put together scripts for the vocals this seemed to turn out pretty well. Both those ladies that filled on are hot as hell and did a great job. Observe.
Basically Anette learned what Tarja did, that Toumas ego and his love for his band supersedes everything else. You’re either onboard with that or you get the fuck out. Getting Floor Jansen to finish out the tour is actually pretty awesome as she has been the person quite a few fans have said they wished she had been the singer. So check out the rest of this tour if you can and we’ll have to wait probably a good two years to see who Toumas puts in the vocalist spot.
In the meantime good luck to Anette on whatever she decides to do with her career. Either go back to that top 40 unit she was with or be female lead for a gothic doom death band somewhere as she showed she can do that to with Swallow the Sun. This should be interesting in the coming years for sure.
