That Devil Music to Go Back Into the Abyss At the End of the Year.

Much like the bands we cover and listen to there comes a time when events and things change to where we need to move on to other directions. After 4 and a half years or so of being in existence That Devil Music is shutting it’s doors at the end of this year. It definitely was a hard decision to make but ultimately needs to be done. For those of you that have been around at or near the beginning you may or may not be asking why. Well to not go over the gory details to much but events have changed away from here that does not afford me the time to put into the website like I used to. I would have loved to have video interviews, a regular podcast and maybe even some ‘Bub swag but I just don’t have the time to put into it to make those things happen. This shouldn’t really come as a big surprise as we’ve been barely active over the past three months or so. The lack of news and releases we collectively cared about was extremely slim and actually made it easier to walk away. Metal and hard rock is still worth writing about and promoting though. These guys and gals bust their ass year in and year out to make music a select few listen to and are passionate about and make very little in return other then appreciation from their fans. I hope my little slice of the internet helped in some way to get the word out on bands that deserved the attention even if we weren’t always happy with the results(both in music and our writing about it). But regardless it’s been a fun ride and cool things have come from it. 20 years ago if someone had told me that I’d have a website and be able to talk to a numerous group of respected metal label people and musicians I would have laughed in your face. It’s been a great experience.

Hey All! Heavy Weather here

I grew up listening to what my folks played on their record player, which was mostly folk and Latin jazz. Santana was about as heavy as my parents got. That being said, my mind was blown when I was about twelve and I heard Tool and Metallica for the first time. My ears had never heard something so evil before. I was hooked. I began listening to as much Thrash as I could. By the time I reached college, I was already listening to Black and Death Metal.

I have a B.A. in philosophy with a minor in music from Saint Mary’s College. I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years, and bass for 6. I listen to all music, but there is a special place in my heart for all things evil, brutal, and fast!

I’ve slowed down on going to shows since my daughter was born, but I’ve been to scores of metal shows. I’ve seen Tool, Behemoth, Exodus, Dublin Death Patrol, Testament, Heaven and Hell Arch Enemy, Carcass, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Satyricon, God Dethroned, Slayer, MEGADETH!, BLS, Motorhead, Dio, Judas Priest, and of course, the fathers of metal, Black Sabbath. That’s just what I can remember off the top of my head….

I really look forward to sharing ideas like other metal minded folks around the interwebs….

Rob's Mid Year Choices For 2012 End of Year List, So Far

I think this is the first time I’ve done a mid year list. It was necessary though in order to get my head straight for the end of year lists that will inevitably take up my time. And so far 2012 has been a fantastic and solid year in music. So here we go with my top 10 of the year so far in alphabetical order because this is just a warm up list and who knows, by the end of the year there might be some releases that supplant them.

 1. Accept – Stalingrad

2. Allegaeon – Formshifter

Introducing Cdee!

I’ve been reading That Devil Music for the past few weeks and saw Rob’s post asking for a few more writers to come and help out the blog. I figured I would ask him if he would be willing to take me on-I’d written some short fiction that I had gotten published in some magazines “Back in the day”, and figured it would be cool to devote some of my time to writing about metal.

I’m a 34 year old from Canada and have been listing to metal in all of its forms since I was about 11 years old. The first actual “metal” album that I listened to was Motley Crue’s “Theatre of Pain” back when I was about 8 years old. After that it was Stryper and Bon Jovi and other “hair metal” bands of that era. About a year or so later I heard AC/DC for the first time and was intrigued but was scared to listen to their albums as I’d heard in church that there were backward masking on their albums and I was too frightened to actually listen to them.

Finally when I was about 12 a couple of kids from the city moved into town and they had cassettes of Anthrax’s “Among the Living” and Megadeth’s “So Far, So Good, So What?” and I was hooked on the heavier forms of metal.I next found my first copy of Metal Maniacs and from there I went onto heavier things such as death and eventually black metal to where I pretty much like something from every metal genre. (And non-metal too).

I’m looking forward to posting here and helping to make That Devil Music an even better blog!

For now, I will leave you with a band that I’ve recently been getting into: Sectorial

TDM Wants You To Write For Us (Maybe)

That’s right. We’re looking for one or two more hardy souls that want to talk about hard rock or metal to join our ranks. Scott and myself have been carrying much of the load but with the impending avalanche of new releases and concerts coming up I’m afraid worthy stuff might get missed in coverage. So this is where you come in.
Do you pour over websites looking for news or just new music to listen to?
Do you lurk and troll in comments on said sites so much you run the risk of getting banned?
Too lazy to start your own site but still feel like your voice should be heard?
Do none of these things apply and you’re just interested in writing about bands you like on the internet?

Here are some things I am looking for:

Be knowledgeable about current bands. Knowledge about legacy bands a plus.
At least 18 but if you’re 30 and over then that is also a plus.
Have a thick skin. You may get trolled or criticized on what you say. This is the internet after all.
Have the ability to be brutally honest but not be hateful when the situation arises.
Skype account is a huge plus.
Be a fan of thrash, death, power, symphonic, gothic, stoner, traditional metal, and hard rock. Hair metal is a bonus. Black and doom metal is also welcome.
Be at least somewhat internet tech savvy. Enough to learn how to embed videos and post articles without being edited every time. If you do know how then score!

What I’m not looking for is:

Huge fans of the majority of Solid State or Victory Records lineups. If you don’t what I mean by that then that’s a plus.
Someone looking to promote their own agenda via TDM. I don’t want one post promoting a friend’s band, website, radio site,or podcast and then disappear.
And the biggest thing of all, not be here just to get free shit. We get promos all the time and I do not want to be cut off because someone decided to take a promo, not write a review, and instead torrent it. That’s not why I started the site. We’re here to help spread the word on bands or genres we like.

If interested after all that we can talk more. Shoot me an e-mail at thatdevilmail@gmail.com and we can go from there. Thanks:)

Time For Reflection and Change For That Devil Music

Calm down. That subject line doesn’t mean That Devil Music is going away. It just means over the past few weeks I’ve had time to reflect on the site and what I want you and I to get out of it. Over the past month or two there have been a series of events that have taken my time away from the site and since it’s Labor Day and there is peace in the Liz household for one day I figured it’s time to let out some things.I’d being lying if I said my desire to post has diminished because it has. And this is attributed to a few things.

That Devil Music’s MidSeason Fantasy Baseball Update

I know baseball isn’t very metal of a sport unless you’re Buster Posey and got steamrolled at home plate. But I enjoy it to a point except my A’s suck complete ass this year with players that should either be retired or in AAA baseball. But a few months ago I joined up in a fantasy baseball league and as promised I didn’t give a week by week update on how we’re fairing against other sites like TNOTB and Metal Injection. But the All-Star break is upon us which officially signals mid season so I figured I’d let you all know how we stack up so far. We fucking rule that’s how. I have a commanding 11 game lead over the next competitor which is Snagon from TNOTB. I really can’t say what this domination is attributed too. I made one trade which was Votto for Werth but that really hasn’t helped either of us out much. Well yes I can. It’s a 8 team league and half the league is MIA. Regardless, I rule and the rest of the league drools. So now that I’ve talked some shit watch my team collapse in the second half and I end up out of the playoffs. I’ll let you know in October.

Our New Theme Is Very Fire And Brimstone. As It Should Be.

That’s right folks. We’ve changed the look of That Devil Music once again. The previous theme was serviceable but didn’t really capture the essence of That Devil Music. The look was actually activated on Saturday night as a soft open if you will so now we’re making the announcement today. The color scheme and flames and stuff give it a more ‘hellish’ look and it should be easier to read with better menu options. Plus “Bub the mascot makes his presence felt in more areas so that’s cool. Let us know what you think. Scott did the bulk of the work on this once again so let him know if you like it or not. We’re also trying a new comment system too to minimize the amount of spam and give it a better look. So comment away. We should be leaving this look alone for quite awhile. Have fun perusing the new stuff. Now back to the usual posting.
