Rob's Picks of 2012 to Send TDM Off With

Another year closes and That Devil Music soon will be fading away as well. Though I’ve lost the time and desire to continue on here with TDM I’d be remiss if I didn’t send out one final push for bands and albums that stood out for me this year. I toyed with ranking them but that takes way too much effort especially since half of them aren’t even in the same genre. Therefore here is my list in no particular order of what I thought the best albums of 2012 were. Enjoy and don’t forget that this site will be archived here after the 1st of the year if you miss us.

7 Horns 7 Eyes – Throes of Absolution: I’m by no means Christian and 99.5 percent of the time am more apt to listen to blasphemous death metal then the other side. But I can be moderate in my tastes and it is funny to me how of all the death metal I listened to this year, a Christian band from Seattle ended up topping everyone. From the excellent and brutal vocals to the almost neo classical shredding to the pummeling riffs 7H7E brought a fresh take to death metal that is sorely needed. This is the bar that needed to be set for all bands regardless of their message.

Diablo Swing Orchestra – Pandora’s Pinata: Veterans of this band already knew what to expect but since was my first exposure it was even fresher to my ears. I love uniqueness to an extent and DSO brought it. Mixing jazz and swing with metal was done well and completely fun. Sweden has yet another band in their arsenal I dig.

3 Inches of Blood Did a Video for 'Metal Woman'

Have you checked out my review of the latest 3 Inches of Blood album ‘ Long Live Heavy Metal’ yet? The better question is have you checked out 3 Inches of Blood yet? Well if you’re still on the fence about them here is a video they just released for the first track ‘Metal Woman’. It’s an ok video but I’ve enjoyed the videos they made from 2009’s ‘Here Waits Thy Doom’ quite a bit more. Though I’m sort of digging the woman’s hairdo in this as it reminds me of 80’s New Wave hairstyles and the copious amounts of hairspray and gel that was used. Enjoy and get out and support these guys if you get a chance.

Pit of Hell Armchair Edition: Metal Alliance Tour Featuring Devildriver

I hope people tuned in last Thursday night when the webcast of the Metal alliance tour was shown from this very website. But chances are pretty good that nobody but my esteemed new colleague Harley did so I figured it’d be cool to give my impressions of the show. I get there is nothing like being at a live event in person but factors come into play like time and money. And the DNA Lounge where this was broadcast from gives the unique opportunity for people to see a live show if they can’t be there. Maybe they’re in another country or another part of this country and want to see what the show has in store before it comes to their town. So without much more lead in let’s get to it shall we?

Devil's Review: 3 Inches of Blood – Long Live Heavy Metal

I think it’s becoming commonly known that us here at That Devil Music are of the above age demographic for fans of metal and bloggers in general. I think if I did the average age for the regular people that contribute it would come out to like 38 or 40 years old. The reason I’m making this observation (or claim) is because the one thing I think we can all agree on is that though we love the bands that have come out over the past 10 years or so, the one thing we miss is the kick ass bands from our youth. I’m talking classic Judas Priest, Iron Maiden,Accept,Iron Maiden,Scorpions….etc. There are revival bands recently that try to capture the magic of the old days such as Holy Grail and do a great job at it. But the one band that stands out and really brings back the vibe, energy, and themes of those days gone by is Vancouver British Columbia’s 3 Inches of Blood. Songs about battles, orcs, cruel women, and occasionally overt sexual themes is what got our hormonal attentions in the 80’s. 3IOB’s latest album (that released today at the time of this writing)’Long Live Heavy Metal’ can easily be summed up as everything that us old farts claim is true heavy metal. But let’s get a little bit further in depth about this shall we?

Listen To 3 Inches of Blood Worship Judas Priest With ‘Leather Lord’

If the rest of ‘Long Live Heavy Metal’ is anything like this track then the 3 Inches of Blood everyone pined for is back. If I’m not mistaken the lyrics, theme and style of this song is complete worship of Painkiller era Judas Priest and it looks like the growls are back with Justin Hagberg making an even more pronounced appearance then before. And that’s fine with me since I like the lower registered growls versus the shrieks of Jaime Hooper anyway. The song is cliched and over the top but if you’re already a fan you should be excited. Here it is.

Hide Your Orcs. 3 Inches of Blood to Release ‘Long Live Heavy Metal’ In March

This time of the year is great as bands that I anticipate starting the press ball rolling. In this case Canada’s own 3 Inches of Blood is set to release the new album ‘Long Live Heavy Metal’ on March 27th. Based on the title alone I have a feeling that the traditional metal vibe from the 80’s will be a strong presence on this album . 3IOB seems to flirt with different styles with each release with Here Waits They Doom having some 70’s metal influences on it. Regardless, i’ve enjoyed all of their releases to this point so I’m hoping the trend continues. Also check for them on the Metal Alliance tour starting March 16th with Devildriver,Dying Fetus,Job for a Cowboy,The Faceless, and a few others. Interesting that these guys tag on these tours with some of the most brutal(and sometimes generic) bands yet 3IOB hasn’t ever been a truly punishing band themselves. Oh well the year is starting to look up already.
