Another legend has left us. Ronnie Montrose has lost his battle with prostate cancer and has passed at age 64. I’m not nearly as versed on Ronnie’s music as I probably should be but there is no denying the impact he left on the rock world and the legions of guitar players that were influenced by him. Most famously his self named band helped launch Sammy Hagar into superstardom but it was probably the band he formed,Gamma, that garnered the most respect for his range of guitar playing styles. Though Ronnie never truly got as famous as many of his peers he kept busy, insanely busy, writing and recording and touring all while session playing with other reknown artists in blues, rock, and jazz. I now really wish I had seen him live when his band (featuring Dave Ellefson at the time on bass) came to the casino I was working at for a show. R.I.P Ronnie and I hope you’re having fun on Space Station No. 5. Here is the official quote from Ronnie’s official website.
Ronnie Montrose ~ 1947-2012
A few months ago, we held a surprise party for Ronnie Montrose’s 64th birthday. He gave an impromptu speech, and told us that after a long life, filled with joy and hardship, he didn’t take any of our love for granted.
He passed today. He’d battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. We miss him already, but we’re glad to have shared with him while we could.
After the jump is some music to honor the great Ronnie Montrose.
